I met Janice around 7 years ago, back when we were both slaving for D&T. :) A small world that we live in, I met Clarence 5 years later, also while we were minions of D&T, only to find out that he and Janice were a couple! For some reason, Clarence waited TEN YEARS before finally proposing. :)

Anyhow, my wedding present for these guys is a photo guest book. The shoot itself was a ton of fun, other than the ONE rule of NO kissing! ;) We walked around Stanley Park, down town Vancouver, ate some sweet Japanese food, and went back out to catch a gorgeous sunset.

Thanks for a fun day you two!! Here are a few more shots from the day. More to come in the guest book. :)

Part Tres (3) of this engagement series will likely be outlining our wedding plans. What are they? No idea yet. Vastttttly complicated is the US immigration system. We first need to settle Viv’s status situation before making any party arrangements. Though most likely, no ceremony, just a simple “legal” marriage in the US, b/c well, it HAS to be in the US. Parties (receptions, but I don’t like cheesy formalities, so I prefer parties), will likely be held in Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Beijing. Plan subject to change, and I’ll update as soon as I know! :)

Now, on to the story of Cancun Mexico…

We arrived after 2 smooth flights, and non existent delays. That was some smooth flying I gotta say. Northwest Airlines delivered! Walking out of Cancun airport, there are piles of people offering to taxi you. I had prearranged transport, so we were shuttled directly to our resort.

Damn.. this was one sweet resort. Nicest hotel I’ve ever seen, short of the Wynn Hotel in Macau (where you really felt like royalty, but they were gonna make a crap load off of you through your gambling losses, so I guess that’s justified). The beach was just ‘ok’ though. The beach in the Cancun hotel zone, or further south in Riviera Maya were much nicer. But the pool (4 of them) were gigantic. I mean the pools surrounded all the buildings, and you literally can’t see pool 4 from pool 2, pool 3 from pool 1 etc

First pic here is the view out outside our window.

Room: The room was 800+ sf.. this wasn’t some exec suite. it was the normal room. They had bigger ones. :P It had massive balcony with a bed on it to lounge on. Who would use that? with pools just below, u’d lounge by the pool! there were also beds all around the pools to lounge in, not just chairs..

It had a hot tub built in to the room… with a nice view too..
Full marble bathroom, dual sink, separate toilet room, separate dual showers (yup two showers side by side. one is natural water from above, one was a moveable shower head.
the room was unusually large. we didn’t use half of it, just spread our crap all over it..

Food: There were 8 restaurants in the resort. Mexican, Mediterranean, French, Asian, Italian, a Lobster house, a Steak house, and a Spanish Tapas place.

Our favorite was… Sea Bass. Didn’t matter which restaurant. Their sea bass was just down right ass kicking. Served in French sauce, italian sauce, didn’t matter.. holy smokes.. we ate so much sea bass. :D

Lobster – ahm.. it’s ok.. not the 5 lb lobsters we had in Bali. They were smallers.. maybe 1 lb or so each? just ok.. after 3 lobsters u get sick of it. :P Afterall, it’s not that it’s so GREAT tasting.. it’s just some what rare.

Drink: 11 bars in total. Drinking starts at breakfast if you wanted. For us, it was usually at lunch. Tough life, getting off the foam floaties so you can order a drink at the swim up bar… and then having to get back ON the foam floatie… :) They had daily special concoctions, which all seemed to taste pretty good.

Days inside the resort: Laze around. Eat. Drink umbrella drinks. Eat. Float on the pool on some foamie things. Drink. Eat. That pretty much sums up the ‘lazing around’ days. We had 2 of those days. Viv had a third, while I went diving

Outside the resort (3 days):

Chichen Itza – Good friends of mine (Nels/Joy) went here a while back… told me about how interesting it was, and how much I’m missing out on a world wonder. Finally!! It was hot though. 80-90% humidity. My cameras were constantly damp! I don’t think I saw anyone who was dry actually. The site itself was quite well maintained. I enjoyed the guide, he was a funny dude! One thing I would’ve liked was more time at the site. I didn’t wanna rent a car, but all the tours were too short. Ah well, no much you can do.

Tulum – 3 hour bus ride. Ouch. But well worth it. We skipped the tour on this one b/c I didn’t want to be herded anymore. Fascinating ruins, surrounded by palm trees, and lined by a gorgeous coastline, turquoise water and fine white sandy beaches. Viv went in to catch some waves. I didn’t want my camera stolen, so I didn’t bother to go in. Probably not a bad idea, seeing I don’t like salt water too much, and there were enough large waves to wash away children..

Diving Cozumel - Diving in Cancun woulda been half the price. save 3 hours of transport time. Was it then worth it to go dive in Cozumel? HELL YAH. I never dove in Cancun, but talked to lots of people who dove both places, and they said it’s not even in the same league. Don’t bother with Cancun, b/c you’ll be disappointed. Good thing I didn’t I guess. Cozumel, the second largest reef system in the world, certainly lived up to its reputation. The coral formations were magnificently well preserved. Saw several turtles, rays, even a lobster. Too bad, no sharks.. :( It reminded me of my first dives in the Great Barrier Reef, aboard the live-aboard ship, with my friends Nelson and Albert. I think it’s far nicer than the dives in Jamaica, Maldives, Bali, etc. Probably only surpassed by the Red Sea in Dahab, Egypt., where it was like National Geographics live. Pictures were taken with a underwater camera, and not yet developed. :)

Shopping – Did none. what??!?! did NONE with Vivian? yup. too hot. too boring… I can walk to a mall from work, why shop in there. Viv bought tiny souvenirs from the gift shop, good enough. :)

Spa – we were gonna do a session. But, back in Seattle, we know a massage therapist couple who gives us pretty steeply discounted massages, and right inside our home too! So we figure we’d skip this.

Interesting Fact: Almost managed to get 3 more days in Cancun. In fact I found out I can use my starwood points for Le Meridien Cancun, and Westin Cancun! :) Class 3 and 4 respectively. :P

Vivian lost her I-20 form the night before we were to come home. Without it, she can’t enter the US. She would need it replaced, fedex’d to Mexico, and rearrange another flight, probably on Wednesday. We left the paper in the computer room while we were checking in our flight. :) One of the bar tenders found it, or some guests found it and gave it to the bar tender. After much panic from Viv, they found it. Great! or not so great, b/c we would’ve otherwise stayed for 3 more days, though at a great cost, since we’d have to get new flights. :P

Oh we did get a tour of their garbage treatment facility. Viv suggested that we go through about 80,000 lbs of garbage bags one by one ( in an attempt to find the paper). Ahm, I said no, and 10 mins later they found the paper.. Good thing huh :P The room that held the garbage was also gigantic though.. The building looked large enough to be a city’s waste treatment plant.

That’s it for Mexico! :)

How we met: (briefly)

I met Vivian in Feb 2007, through her sister Kaman. We were both slaving full time at Ernst & Young. We truly started dating around June of 2007, and it was rocky times at the beginning. In November, we moved in together into my home in Kirkland, and that’s where our relationship deepened. In every relationship there are ups and downs. We had our share of arguments, but also wonderful memories. Some were fun, such as Vegas, Bali, HK, while some of the best ones were plain and homely. I grew attached to her cooking! :P Viv really took good care of me.

Fast forward: (told ya it was brief…)

Week before June 15, 2008

The key to victory is the element of surprise. With the help of some loving friends, I planned a trip to Cancun, Mexico. I had a pretty good idea she would say yes. I guess if she said no, I’d be sipping umbrella drinks, in a gigantic room in mexico, all by myself? I digress. Ring, check. Time off for Vivian from her awesome boss Suzanne, check. Organized packing for her, and transport to airport, check. Things worked out by itself. We were in Vancouver that Saturday for a friend’s engagement shoot. This gave plenty of time for her sister to come and pack for her, also gave me a reason to start packing for the week long trip without rousing suspicion.

June 15, 2008, Morning

Father’s Day. My dad was leaving Vancouver, and we managed to have a father’s day brunch with my dad. That was great timing. Of course no plans were divulged as secrecy was critical to success. :P

June 15, 2008, 2pm

We arrive home from Vancouver. Stopping by her sister’s home to pick up our dog, and drop off the food we got for them. So far so good. Vivian complains about how tired she is.. about how badly she needs a vacation. Funny thing, she mentions how she wants to get a tan! I mutter something about “oh we can tan if you want too.. we have a front yard!”

June 15, 2008, 3pm

We arrive home. unpack some what. House is quite dirty but that’s not my concern at the moment. I need her to leave the house.. I need to transfer some stuff, check in online, and finish packing. I send Viv off to buy some food at Costco, figuring it would give me sufficient time. But, we just got back, and both tired. She wanted to go tomorrow. Hmmm…..I promise to do all her house work in exchange. Give her full credit, she figure something was up.. “What?? there’s no free lunch, what are you up to?! why would u offer such a good deal??” hahaha Ooops.. I said nono.. i just offered, it doesn’t mean I’ll actually do it!! That seems to have worked! she was off, smiling.

June 15, 2008, 4:30pm

She’s back!! Mad scramble. Luggage packed and hidden? check. Ring ready? check. Checked-in flight online? check. oh crap! I didn’t do any of the house work. Vivian, the ever sharp one she is, noticed that right away. “wait a minute.. have you been playing with photos this whole time?!” hahaha..

Well we are 1 hour away from leaving to her sister’s house for a BBQ. No more time to waste.. So without further adieu, surprise 1 – (not really that much of a shock in hindsight) I got on one knee and just asked her to marry me. No cheesy speeches, no hand written songs, just a plain question. THANK GOD, she said YES!! :) The whole pitch I was going for was, “honey i’m so boring, i have nothing fancy planned” (when in fact the vacation was planned)… All about surprises.. in stages! She’s sweet, she said “it’s ok! love you anyways. just happy to spend my life with you”. awww…… wait..that’s not how it should be.. she was suppose to complain, and yell at me for not being more thoughtful!! Damn it! now I can’t flip it around on her! :P Oh well, so sweet nonetheless.

No ring shot yet, so here’s a quick one of her with her ring on.  It’s from when we just arrived in Mexico. We were waiting for our room to be prep’d.

June 15, 2008, 6pm

We get to her sister’s house for bbq. YUM. love their Weber BBQ machine. Well it’s not the machine, it’s Jason and his mad BBQ skills. I wanna see Chef Albert on a Weber.. that’d be a match made in heaven.. I digress again.
We’re 2 hours from leaving for the airport. Viv at this point has NO CLUE what’s going on. She is lamenting how tired she is from the weekend, and how she needs to go to work tomorrow.
Woohoo!! Surprise has been achieved! Victory is mine!!!!!!!! Muwaaahhahaha

Not so fast. She calls her dad in HK to tell him about our engagement. Of course her sister Kaman has told their dad about the whole setup while we were away!?!!!. His dad wishes her a nice trip.

…..

Vivian: WHAT TRIP?!?!?!

June 15, 2008, 6:30pm

We break the news to her. We’re going to Cancun!! Staying at one of the newest all inclusive resort there – Excellence Playa Mujeres

Well, I managed to keep it a secret until one hour before departure.. not bad I guess..

Vivian goes into a state of panic. what about my job?? got time off already honey. What about Lea? your sister’s got her.. What about?? what about??!?! what about?!?!?!?!?

Finally she calms down, and smiles. finally. :)

June 15, 2008, 8pm

Viv has completed her check of all the luggage. Got in last minute phone calls, and OFF WE GO to the airport!

Big thank you goes to Suzanne for getting time off for Viv, and to Kaman/Jason for helping Viv pack, and picking us up at the airport.

Story to be continued in “Our Engagement – Part Dos (2)”

Vivian and I are engaged. We’re now headed for a week long vacation in Cancun. :)

This was organized as a surprise for Viv, so only a few people were in on it. Her sister helped pack for her! More details when we come back!

Viv had her MBA commencement ceremony today at Qwest Field in Seattle. I took along a new teleconverter to photograph the event. :) Her parents flew in from Hong Kong for this, and I’m sure they were super excited their little girl was graduating from her MBA school. Now she can go conquer the world. :)

We’re all very proud of her!

We went to dinner with all of Vivian’s family, along with her brother inlaw’s family. It was at the Anthony’s Restaurant in Edmonds, WA. OH MY was it a gorgeous location. It rained all day, but the sun peaked out in the evening, and it was a beautiful sunset. I had to post some pics for this, I haven’t seen a sunset this nice in Seattle before.

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of second shooting for Jack Young of Jack Young Photography at Janet and Evan’s wedding. They were married on the island of Rhodes in Greece!! I saw some of their photos, and they were just amazing. Saturday was their reception, and these two were so easy to work with. Little instructions required! Just put them together, and they giggled, kissed and melted in each other’s arms! :)

Their reception was held at the Fairmont Hotel in Seattle. They had Austin and Jeremy of Nite Lite Entertainment MC, and DJ the entire event. Woodland Flowers prepared the floral arrangements, and Janet’s dress was from Bellevue Bridal.

There were definitely a lot of happy parents and guests on the dance floor! :)

There’s a reason I haven’t updated this for quite a while. Vivian’s parents are visiting from Hong Kong! This has kept me busy with constant house cleaning, and guest entertainment. :) I’m not complaining though, b/c her parents are wonderful people, and care a great deal about us. Here’s a couple of photos of Viv and her parents.

They all LOVE Lea as well.. so here’s a shaved Lea pic

Last friday night, we also went to see Corteo by Cirque Du Soleil. It was quite a good show, although I much prefer the skill aspects than the obvious attempts at humour. Maybe I’m just not easily amused by a clown? :

It was a fun week! We headed up to vancouver for a quick 2 day visit. Went to a Mariner’s game tonight, and more events to come in the next few days. Of course, Saturday will be Viv’s MBA Graduation. Pics to come!

Both Viv and I are sick, but this weekend has been just gorgeous in Seattle. Really couldn’t stand being stuck inside for another day. So we packed up Lea and her goodies and drove to the Arboretum near the University of Washington in Seattle. I never knew this place existed until a couple of weeks ago. The place has flowers in full bloom.
Azalea Way

Reflections

Too bad half way through, Vivian really didn’t feel well. The heat probably didn’t help. So we only stayed about an hour, but hope to go back and check out the Japanese Gardens inside.

lea and vivmore reflections

We turned Lea into a boy today. :) It started out innocently. Vivian just wanted to trim off some loose hair because it’s getting hot. But the old story of one cut here, one cut there, and soon enough, we had to chop it pretty much all off :) I photographed Vivian in action, as well as some snapshots of poor Lea after her bath.

In action

What do you guys think? should we name her Leo instead? :P
